Poker is a game, and everybody likes to win. Besides that, you may play poker for fun or to test your skills and your strategic abilities. Still, just like in any other game, there are a few rules that you have to obey. They are easy enough to consider online poker as a game that you can learn in a few minutes but requires many years to completely understand it.
Basic Rules
Each poker player contributes to the central pot that can be made up of game chips and chips as real money. Each player is dealt a few cards some of which are face up and some are face down (depending on the type of game that you play). Betting rounds come next, when players choose when and how much they can afford to bet (considering their cards). There’s a showdown at the end of the game where the remaining player or the player with the best hand wins the central pot, all the chips on the table.
The Deck Of Cards
The Four Suits
The 52 cards in a deck are divided into four suits: clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades. Each of these suits has 13 cards of different ranks. The suits are all of equal value, no suit is higher than any other suit.
The Thirteen Ranks
In poker, the ace is the highest card and the 2 (deuce) is the lowest. However, the ace can be used as a low card to form the straight 5432A.
Hand Rankings
No matter the type of game that you are playing, the hands ranking is always the same, and the player with the best hand wins. A poker hand consists of five cards and the first hand you see below is considered to be the best; then the second is the next and so on.
Royal Flush
The highest-ranking straight flush possible, namely: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 in the same suit.
Straight Flush
Five cards, in order and all the same suit. Example: 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Hearts.
Four of a kind - Quads
Four of the same card, in different suits. Example: four Queens. The fifth card is irrelevant. Four Aces (aces being the highest card) beat all other four of a kind.
Full House or Full Boat
Three of a kind, plus two of a kind. For example: three jacks and two 7's. The hand with the highest three cards (i.e. 3 aces) wins over any other Full House.
Flush
Five cards all of the same suit, but not in sequence. Example: 3, 5, 6, 9 and King of Clubs.
Straight
Five cards in sequence, but of mixed suits. For example: 3 of Hearts, 4 of Clubs, 5 of Spades, 6 of Clubs, 7 of Diamonds.
Three of a Kind or Set
For example: three Jacks. If two players have three of a kind, the player with the higher three of a kind wins. Three Aces beats out three 4's.
Two Pairs
For example: two Kings and two 3's. The hand with the highest pair wins. In event of a tie, the hand with the highest remaining card (fifth card) wins.
Pair
Two cards of the same rank. For example: two Queens.
High card
This hand is judged by the highest card held (i.e. one Ace).
